At the recent National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) event, Trisha Zach, NKBA’s head of research, shared insights on the latest trends shaping kitchen and bath design in "Five Key Trends Shaping the Future of the Kitchen." Below is a summary. Please watch the video for the full presentation.
1. Personalized Design
Consumers are moving away from cookie-cutter kitchens, opting for spaces tailored to their preferences and lifestyles. Examples include pet-friendly kitchens with specialized features and clutter-free kitchens with functional pantries and storage solutions.
2. Togetherness
The desire for open floor plans and larger kitchens remains strong. Kitchens now serve as central gathering places, incorporating elements like eat-in areas, oversized islands, and open layouts to foster family togetherness and socialization.
3. Healthy Living
There is a growing focus on design choices that promote health and wellness. This includes increased refrigeration for fresh foods, appliances that support healthy cooking methods (like steam cooking and air frying), and integrating indoor and outdoor spaces for natural light and biophilic design.
4. Minimalistic Design
Minimalism is about creating clutter-free, stress-free kitchens through thoughtful design. Elements like European-style cabinetry, integrated appliances, and appliance garages are becoming popular. Pantries of all types are essential for maintaining a tidy and functional kitchen space.
5. Well-Curated Lighting
Lighting technology has advanced significantly, and well-designed lighting is now crucial for both functionality and aesthetics in kitchens. Ambient lighting, task lighting, and decorative fixtures are all being used to create versatile and beautiful kitchen environments.
