Care & Maintenance: Quartz
The beauty and elegance of quartz is matched by its durability. Quartz is easy to maintain, non-porous and resistant to staining, heat, and moisture.
For everyday cleaning, simply wipe your quartz countertop with a soft cloth, using mild soap and water. A mild household cleaner such as Windex®, Simple Green®, or 409® can also be used . Always wipe surface thoroughly dry to avoid streaking and film build up. Spills should be wiped up immediately. Always use a non-abrasive cloth when cleaning to avoid dulling your surface.
Oils and grease on any counter can leave the finish looking messy, smudged, and reflect light unpleasantly. While mild soap and water will handle most situations, for more stubborn spots, use a rubbing alcohol and water solution or mild household cleaners, such as Windex®, Simple Green®, 409®, etc.
Materials that harden as they dry (such as gum, food, etc.) can be especially tenacious. Remove these by gently scraping away the excess with a plastic scraper or razor blade followed by one of the approved daily cleaning methods.
When cleaning any surface, never apply pressure that is heavier than the natural weight of your hand to avoid damaging the finish and causing dull spots.
To remove hard water deposits on your countertops, use a cleaning vinegar or non-abrasive scale remover solution, followed by one of the approved daily cleaning methods.
Matte finish surfaces require more daily maintenance than polished surfaces. Finger prints, wet spots, metal marks, and other signs of daily living show more on these types of surfaces. Apply the same cleaning guidelines with more frequency and gentler cleaning movement. If necessary, use Simple Green to remove any difficult spots. Matte finishes are not recommended for high traffic areas.
Trivets: Quartz surfaces are heat-"resistant", but are not heat-"proof". Hot pans and heat-generating appliances (frying pans, baking pans, electric skillets, crock-pots, etc.) can damage your countertops due to excessive heat or sudden temperature changes. To prevent damage caused by heat, always use a trivet or hot pad to protect the surface and do not place hot items directly on your countertop surface.
Cutting Boards: Quartz surfaces are very resistant to scratches but are not scratch-"proof". Always use a cutting board when preparing food or using sharp objects; never chop or slice food directly on your countertops.
The below list provides examples of items to avoid (but is not fully comprehensive):
- No Wax or Polish Necessary - Because it is nonporous, quartz does not require sealants or waxes. Quartz keeps its lustrous gloss and ultra-smooth surface without polishing or applying sealant.
- Keep Solvents and Powerful Chemicals off of the Counter - Avoid exposing quartz to strong chemicals and solvents, especially paint removers or furniture strippers. Keep nail polish remover, bleach, detergent, and oil soaps away from your quartz. Also, avoid high-acid cleaners such as toilet bowl cleaner, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, rust remover, Bar Keepers Friend®, etc.
- Avoid the use of abrasive cleaning powders and pads or Magic Eraser® sponges (or similar products).
- Permanent Markers - Keep permanent markers and inks away from your countertops. Should these materials come into contact with the surface, clean first as outlined above in the Daily Cleaning section. If the stain persists, moisten a cloth with GooGone®, or a comparable product, and rub it into the stain. Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove any cleaner residue.
If any of the substances mentioned above come into contact with your quartz, rinse the exposed surface immediately and thoroughly with water.
